The death toll from the recent 7.9
earthquake in China my eventually reach half a
million, many of them children. Seismologists say that an
earthquake is overdue in the Los Angeles area—could it be that
bad here?

We may soon be able to beat the traffic by commuting to
work in a NEW kind of
hybrid:
an electric plane/car. And when it comes to planes, should
we design airplanes that
flap their
wings like birds do? Birds, bats and insects flap their wings,
and they outperform man-made aircraft in aerobatics and
efficiency. Engineers may be able to design planes with
wingspans smaller than a deck of playing cards (handy for
parking in tight spots once you get to the office!)

Melting Glaciers Release DDT

…and pesticides may cause Parkinsons Disease -
Our bodies are already
filled with
pesticides. We know that melting glaciers could release
dangerous
microbes, and now it's been discovered that they may also
release pesticides! In New Scientist, Ewen Callaway
writes, "Decades after most countries stopped spraying DDT,
frozen stores of the insecticide are now trickling out of
melting Antarctic glaciers. The change means Adélie penguins
have recently been exposed to the chemical." And that
means that WE could be exposed to it too.
